CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Brett Ostrowski stood by the door of the War Room, coffee in hand, waiting to hand it to Detective Johnson when she walked in. Today would play out differently because he was going to kill her with kindness from the start. He would hand her the coffee and then ask her how her night went.

He knew that Bullock’s next video would be released today, so he was up and out of the house by five. He listened to the radio and found out it had been released, but that it was taken down right away due to disturbing scenes. Gino and Jade had been speculating all morning long about what could be so disturbing to have the video be intercepted and quarantined.

Ostrowski knew he would be able to see it here today, no matter what it contained, so he arrived before everyone else.

Sure enough, Detective Johnson was surprised to see him when she walked in. But when he handed her the coffee, she couldn’t grab it because she had a large green smoothie already in her hand.

“No problem.” Ostrowski shrugged and gave it to the captain.

“Thanks, Ostrowski,” Vargas said. “Make sure your stomach is settled, because I’ve seen the video, and it’s a shocker.”

“What’s so shocking?” Shaneel asked.

Benchley, the tech guy, stuck a USB drive in the side of the war room computer and fired it up. There was a steady stream of police officers and office workers and the room was soon filled to bursting. Everybody wanted to be one of the few who managed to see the train wreck.

The monitor on the wall flashed to life, and the smiling, yet crazy-eyed face of Duncan Bullock appeared. “Welcome everyone, to our second episode. As I said in the introduction, we are going to examine each of the segments of the show I Do or I Don’t in depth....”

The war room remained silent while the two women disclosed their picks and Bullock shot them down. There were little murmurs here and there, but nobody wanted to be the one to make too much noise and miss out on what was being said.

Multiple gasps were heard when Bullock looked at Becca Dodge and said, “Oh, I know he’s killed before. I have proof of that.”

Then came the video of Little Darwin, a.k.a. Chris Haddock, torturing the mouse. The viewers in the room had all manner of reactions. Some cursed the kid, others gagged, and still others wept.

When the garbage disposal went off, the camera cut back to the two women. Brooke Winthrop had her face in her hands and appeared to be crying. Becca Dodge stared disbelievingly into the distance, most certainly at the monitor in the little makeshift studio.

“I also have a file here containing a psychiatric review of Chris Haddock from right around the time this video was taken. It says, and I quote, ‘The subject exhibits signs of narcissistic and socio-pathetic tendencies.’”

“Where was this review? And why didn’t we get a copy of it?” Becca asked.

“It was filed away.
